Monfragüe is a perfect destination for discovering nature as a family. Its great rocky cliffs, dehesas, Mediterranean woodland and the Tagus and Tiétar rivers create a landscape where children and adults alike can learn, observe wildlife and enjoy outdoor experiences.
Although the National Park is internationally renowned for its birds, there are many other ways to enjoy it with children: cruising along the river, exploring the landscape by 4x4, discovering livestock farming in the dehesa or taking part in environmental education activities.
Here are ten experiences that are particularly recommended for discovering Monfragüe as a family and creating unforgettable memories.
10 things to do in Monfragüe with kids

10 - Combine nature, heritage and gastronomy
For families with a full day available, combining several different experiences is one of the best ways to discover Monfragüe.
A day can include a walk in nature, a cultural visit, time for wildlife watching and a meal featuring traditional Extremaduran food. This way, children and adults can enjoy a variety of activities without the day becoming repetitive.
There are also organised experiences that combine a boat trip with guided routes, meals or visits around Serradilla, making it much easier to plan the day.
09 - Discover the products and flavours of the dehesa
Food is also a way to understand the landscape. Many traditional products from Extremadura are directly connected to the dehesa, livestock farming and the area’s natural resources.
Cheeses, Iberian products, honey, olive oil and other local specialities offer a simple and tasty way to introduce children to the culture of the region.
Some experiences also explain how these foods are produced and the relationship between the landscape, the animals and the people who work in the dehesa.

08 - Take part in a nature workshop
Environmental education workshops make a visit much more interactive.
Through games, challenges and explanations adapted to their age, children can learn to recognise animal tracks, distinguish different bird species, identify plants and discover how Mediterranean woodland works.
It is an especially interesting activity because children do not simply look at the landscape: they actively participate and return home with a better understanding of the nature they have visited.
07 - Explore the Monfragüe area by bike
Exploring the surroundings of Monfragüe by bicycle is a great way to discover rural tracks, dehesas and small villages at a relaxed pace.
Electric bikes can make the experience much easier and allow the level of effort to be adapted to different levels of fitness.
When travelling with children, the most important thing is to choose a distance appropriate for their age, avoid the hottest hours of the day and check the route conditions and permitted access in advance.

06 - Enjoy a small adventure in the heart of nature
The Monfragüe area offers opportunities to complement peaceful viewpoints and visits with slightly more active experiences.
Hiking routes, nature games and different outdoor activities allow families to discover the area in a fun and interactive way.
Activities may vary depending on the provider and the season, so it is always advisable to check the minimum age, duration, difficulty and exact location beforehand.
05 - Discover the dehesa and extensive livestock farming
The dehesa is much more than a landscape of holm oaks and cork oaks. It is a living ecosystem where nature, livestock and traditional human activities coexist.
An agritourism visit allows families to meet animals, discover how a livestock farm works and understand activities such as grazing, sheep shearing and cork harvesting.
For children, it is particularly interesting because many concepts they normally encounter in books or on screens can be discovered here directly in the landscape.

04 - Climb to Monfragüe Castle as a family
The climb to Monfragüe Castle combines history, nature and one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the entire National Park.
From the top, it is much easier to understand the scale of the area: the mountain ranges covered in Mediterranean vegetation, the course of the Tagus and the vastness of the Monfragüe landscape.
For children, reaching the castle also adds a small sense of adventure to the visit. The final section requires walking and climbing steps, so it is worth considering the age and fitness level of younger children.
Once at the top, the views make the effort well worth it.

03 - Spot large birds with binoculars
Monfragüe is one of those places where looking up at the sky can become a game for the whole family.
The cliffs and mountain ranges of the National Park are home to griffon vultures, cinereous vultures, Egyptian vultures, black storks and eagles, among many other species.
With binoculars, children can try to spot the birds, follow their flight and learn to recognise some of their differences. Using a spotting scope makes the experience even more impressive, as it allows you to observe birds from a considerable distance.
Salto del Gitano and Portilla del Tiétar are two excellent places to get started.

02 - Explore Monfragüe by 4x4
A 4x4 tour allows you to enter dehesas, travel along rural tracks and discover different landscapes around Monfragüe without the need for long walks.
For families, it offers a particularly appealing balance between adventure and comfort. Children can enjoy travelling in the vehicle and looking for animals while the guide helps interpret the landscape and identify footprints and other signs of wildlife.
Depending on the season and a little luck, red deer, wild boar and different birds of prey may be seen along the route.
Travelling through several different environments in a single outing also provides a very complete overview of the area.

01 - Cruise along the Tagus as a family
Seeing Monfragüe from the water is one of the most comfortable and distinctive ways to discover its landscape as a family.
During the cruise, children and adults can observe the great rocky cliffs, slopes covered with Mediterranean vegetation and look out for some of the birds and other animals that live in the area.
Because it is a peaceful activity requiring very little physical effort, it is especially suitable for families with children, older visitors or groups made up of different age groups.
When the cruise is also accompanied by a nature guide, the boat becomes a genuine landscape interpretation experience: children observe, ask questions and discover new things while the scenery slowly passes around them.
