The best hiking routes in Monfragüe

Monfragüe is one of the best destinations in Extremadura for hiking and discovering its landscapes, wildlife and Mediterranean forest up close. Its marked trails lead through some of the National Park’s most iconic places, from viewpoints and riverbanks to mountain ranges, dehesa landscapes and historic sites.

Each hiking route in Monfragüe offers a different way to discover the National Park. Some take you to its most iconic places, while others lead into quieter areas among streams, dehesa landscapes and Mediterranean forest. Here is what you can expect from each one.

Red Route: Monfragüe Castle and Salto del Gitano

The Red Route is one of the most complete trails for discovering Monfragüe and one of the best choices if you are visiting the National Park for the first time. Along the way, you pass through some of its most representative landscapes and reach several of its must-see locations.

The route takes you close to Monfragüe Castle, offers sweeping views over the park and leads to the impressive Salto del Gitano, one of the best places to watch griffon vultures and other birds of prey.

It is more demanding than the Green and Yellow routes, but it is also one of the most complete ways to experience the essence of Monfragüe on foot.

Green Route: Malvecino Stream and Cerro Gimio

The Green Route is an excellent alternative for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in the natural surroundings of Monfragüe without taking on an overly long trail. Its route passes through different Mediterranean forest environments and particularly peaceful areas of the park.

One of its main attractions is Cerro Gimio, which offers beautiful views over the surrounding landscape and the scenery that characterises Monfragüe.

Thanks to its distance and difficulty level, this route is highly recommended for anyone looking to combine hiking, nature and panoramic views in a relatively comfortable outing.

Yellow Route: towards La Tajadilla

The Yellow Route offers a pleasant walk through some of Monfragüe’s quieter landscapes. Along the way, you will encounter dehesa, Mediterranean scrubland and areas close to the water, creating a particularly varied itinerary.

One of the most interesting stops is the La Tajadilla viewpoint, a great place to pause, admire the landscape and watch the park’s wildlife.

It is especially suitable for visitors who prefer walking without major climbs and enjoying the surroundings at a more relaxed pace.
