Monfragüe is famous for its viewpoints, hiking trails and impressive rocky cliffs, but navigating its waters reveals another side of the landscape.

From the boat, you can see how the mountain ranges descend towards the river, admire the rock formations at close range and appreciate the vast Mediterranean forest that covers much of the area.

The gentle pace of the boat also makes this an especially enjoyable experience for visitors who want to discover Monfragüe without undertaking long hikes.

Wildlife you may see from the boat

Griffon vulture

The griffon vulture is one of Monfragüe’s most representative and easiest birds to observe. Groups can often be seen soaring above the cliffs on thermal currents or resting on rocky ledges.

Their huge wingspan and characteristic circling flight make them one of the most spectacular species to observe during a boat trip through Monfragüe.

Spanish imperial eagle

The Spanish imperial eagle is one of the great treasures of Monfragüe’s wildlife and one of the most sought-after birds of prey among birdwatchers.

It may be seen flying over the mountains in search of food or perched on rocks, trees and elevated points from which it surveys its territory. Its presence makes Monfragüe one of the most important areas for the conservation of this species.

Egyptian vulture

This migratory bird of prey returns to Monfragüe during the warmer months to breed.

Its black-and-white plumage and yellow face make adult birds relatively easy to identify. Although less numerous than griffon vultures, seeing an Egyptian vulture flying above the cliffs or resting on the rocks is one of the great birdwatching experiences in the park.

Cinereous vulture

Another of Monfragüe’s great birds of prey. Its impressive size and much darker plumage distinguish it from the griffon vulture, along with its more uniform silhouette in flight.

It can be seen throughout the year soaring above the Mediterranean forest, where some of its main feeding and nesting areas are found.

Mammals

Although birds are usually the main stars of Monfragüe, several of the park’s characteristic mammals may also be seen during the boat trip.

Red deer, fallow deer and wild boar may appear along the riverbanks, hillsides and areas of Mediterranean forest, particularly during the quieter hours of the day.

At certain times of year, red deer become especially prominent, particularly during the rut, when males produce their characteristic roaring calls.

Other, more elusive mammals may also be present, although they are generally much harder to spot. Travelling quietly by boat offers an interesting perspective and may increase the chances of detecting wildlife close to the water.
