Portilla del Tiétar is one of the best places in Monfragüe for birdwatching and one of the National Park’s most special viewpoints. Located at the eastern entrance to the protected area, this narrow gorge between towering rock walls offers excellent opportunities to observe some of Monfragüe’s most emblematic species.
Although it is less famous than Salto del Gitano, its tranquillity is precisely part of its appeal. The Tiétar River flows between the rocks, creating a spectacular landscape and an exceptional setting for birdwatching.

Portilla del Tiétar is one of the main birdwatching locations in Monfragüe National Park. Its rocky walls provide shelter, resting places and nesting sites for numerous species.
The particular shape of the landscape makes it possible to observe birds in considerable detail as they fly over the cliffs or rest on rocky ledges. Unlike some of the park’s larger viewpoints, Portilla del Tiétar offers a more intimate and peaceful atmosphere.
What birds can you see at Portilla del Tiétar?
Griffon vulture
The griffon vulture is one of Monfragüe’s most representative and easiest birds to observe. Groups of griffon vultures can often be seen soaring above the cliffs on thermal currents or resting on rocky ledges.
Their enormous wingspan and characteristic circling flight make them one of the most spectacular species for visitors to Portilla del Tiétar.

Spanish imperial eagle
The Spanish imperial eagle is one of the great treasures of Monfragüe’s wildlife and one of the most sought-after birds of prey among birdwatchers.
It may be seen flying over the mountains in search of food or perched in trees and other elevated positions from which it surveys its territory. Its presence makes Monfragüe one of the most important areas for the conservation of this species.
Black stork
The black stork is one of Monfragüe’s most emblematic and sought-after species. Unlike the white stork, it prefers quiet areas, rocky landscapes and waterways far from large human settlements.
Around Portilla del Tiétar, it can sometimes be seen flying above the river, feeding near the water or using the cliffs as shelter.

Eurasian eagle-owl
Portilla del Tiétar is one of the most interesting places in Monfragüe to detect the presence of the Eurasian eagle-owl.
This large nocturnal bird of prey uses the cliffs and rocky areas as shelter and hunting territory. Around sunset and during the first hours of the night, its deep call can sometimes be heard echoing between the walls of the gorge.
Egyptian vulture
This migratory bird of prey returns to Monfragüe during the warmer months to breed.
Its black-and-white plumage and yellow face make adult birds relatively easy to identify. Although less numerous than griffon vultures, seeing an Egyptian vulture flying over the cliffs or resting on the rocks is one of the great birdwatching experiences in the park.

Cinereous vulture
Another of Monfragüe’s great birds of prey. Its impressive size and much darker plumage distinguish it from the griffon vulture, as does its more uniform silhouette in flight.
It can be seen throughout the year soaring above the Mediterranean forest, where some of its main feeding and nesting areas are located.
Portilla del Tiétar is one of those places where you do not need to be a bird expert to enjoy the experience. Simply stop, watch the cliffs and wait. Vultures, eagles, storks and other species appear over the landscape, making this viewpoint one of Monfragüe’s great nature experiences.
Birdwatching tips
Bring binoculars. They are almost essential for making the most of the viewpoint.
Use a spotting scope if you have one. It makes it easier to locate birds resting on the cliffs.
Keep quiet. This improves your chances of seeing wildlife and avoids disturbing the birds.
Be patient. Spending a few minutes watching usually produces better results than making a quick stop.
Stay within the designated areas. There is no need to approach the cliffs to enjoy excellent observations.
Choose the right time. Early morning and late afternoon are often particularly rewarding.
A natural gateway to Monfragüe
Portilla del Tiétar is not only remarkable for its birdlife. Its landscape also helps visitors understand one of Monfragüe’s most characteristic geological features: the natural passes known locally as portillas.
Here, the Tiétar River cuts through the rocky ridges of the mountains, forming a narrow passage between enormous rock walls. The combination of water, quartzite and Mediterranean forest creates one of the most distinctive landscapes at the eastern entrance to the National Park.
Portilla del Tiétar or Salto del Gitano?
Salto del Gitano and Portilla del Tiétar are two of Monfragüe’s great birdwatching viewpoints, but they offer different experiences.
Salto del Gitano impresses with the sheer scale of Peña Falcón and the large numbers of vultures that can be observed.
Portilla del Tiétar is smaller, more intimate and quieter, making birdwatching particularly enjoyable in an attractive natural setting.
If you have enough time, both viewpoints are well worth visiting.
