Monfragüe is not a natural area to be admired only from a distance. It is a place that invites you to navigate, explore, observe and understand.
Between the Tagus and Tiétar rivers, the National Park brings together some of the most characteristic landscapes of the Mediterranean ecosystem: dehesas with holm oaks and cork oaks, mountains covered in vegetation, imposing rocky cliffs and an extraordinary diversity of wildlife.
Beyond its famous viewpoints, there are many different ways to experience the area. Cruising along the river, exploring its landscapes by 4x4, watching large birds or discovering the dehesa all offer completely different perspectives on Monfragüe.
If this is your first visit, these are five must-do experiences in Monfragüe.
5 experiences to discover Monfragüe
05 - Discover the dehesa
The dehesa is an essential part of both the landscape and cultural identity of the Monfragüe area. Holm oaks, cork oaks, pastures and extensive livestock farming form an ecosystem shaped over centuries by the relationship between nature and human activity.
Taking part in an agritourism experience helps visitors understand how this landscape is managed and discover some of the traditional activities that continue to form part of rural life in Extremadura.
Depending on the time of year, visitors may encounter grazing, livestock farming, sheep shearing, cork harvesting or other activities linked to the countryside. It is an excellent way to discover that Monfragüe is not only about wild nature: it is also a living landscape deeply connected to its traditions.

04 - Photograph Monfragüe
Monfragüe offers excellent opportunities for landscape and wildlife photography throughout the year.
The early morning light over the dehesa, large birds of prey soaring above the cliffs, mist covering the waterways and the warm colours of sunset create completely different scenes throughout the day.
Each season also transforms the landscape. Spring intensifies the colours of the vegetation, summer brings long days and open skies, autumn changes the tones of the countryside and winter creates a quieter atmosphere with especially interesting light.
For those looking for something more specialised, wildlife photography experiences and observation from hides are also available, allowing photographers to work patiently while minimising disturbance to the animals.
03 - Watch Monfragüe’s great birds
Monfragüe is one of the Iberian Peninsula’s great birdwatching destinations.
Its mountains, forests and rocky cliffs are home to emblematic species including the griffon vulture, cinereous vulture, Egyptian vulture, black stork and Spanish imperial eagle.
One of the best-known places to start birdwatching is Salto del Gitano, where vultures constantly soar around Peña Falcón. However, other viewpoints such as Portilla del Tiétar also offer excellent opportunities to discover the National Park’s extraordinary birdlife.
Using binoculars or a spotting scope and spending a few minutes observing quietly can completely transform the experience. And when accompanied by an expert guide, identifying species and understanding their behaviour becomes much easier.

02 - Explore Monfragüe by 4x4 with an expert guide
Monfragüe is a vast and diverse area. A guided 4x4 tour allows you to explore several different environments in a single experience: dehesas, Mediterranean woodland, riverside areas, mountains and places of particular interest for wildlife watching.
The greatest value of the experience comes from being accompanied by a guide who knows the area well. Their expertise helps visitors interpret the landscape, recognise tracks, identify species and discover details that could easily go unnoticed when exploring independently.
Travelling by vehicle also makes it possible to cover greater distances and discover different parts of the area without undertaking long walks. This makes 4x4 tours particularly appealing for families, couples and travellers visiting Monfragüe for the first time.

01 - Cruise along the Tagus and discover Monfragüe from the water
The Tagus River is one of the defining features of the Monfragüe landscape, and navigating its waters offers a completely different perspective on the area.
From the boat, the mountain ranges, rocky cliffs and vast expanses of Mediterranean woodland take on a new dimension. The cruise allows you to enjoy the landscape at a relaxed pace and observe refuge and nesting areas used by some of the region’s most characteristic species.
When the trip is accompanied by a nature guide, the cruise also becomes an environmental interpretation experience. The landscape, vegetation and wildlife help visitors understand the close relationship between the river and the ecosystem surrounding it.
Thanks to its comfort and the variety of elements it reveals, this is one of the most complete experiences for anyone visiting Monfragüe for the first time.
